The Most Beautiful Weddings Aren’t the Most Expensive

The Most Beautiful Weddings Aren’t the Most Expensive

Every week I speak with couples who begin our conversation with an apology.

“We’re only having ten guests.”

“It’s just a simple ceremony.”

“We don’t have a huge budget.”

“We’re not doing all the traditional things.”

I always smile because after officiating hundreds of weddings, I’ve learned something that often surprises people. The weddings I remember most are rarely the biggest. They’re the ones where love is the centre of everything.

Over the years I’ve stood with couples in elegant wineries, beautiful gardens, cozy chapels, private homes, and quiet corners overlooking the Niagara River. Some celebrations have included more than a hundred guests. Others have been witnessed by only two people.

The size of the wedding has never determined the size of the joy.

Some of the most moving ceremonies I’ve ever officiated have been the simplest. A couple holding hands. Parents wiping away tears. Children presenting the rings. A favourite song playing softly in the background. A promise spoken from the heart.

Those are the moments that stay with people.

It’s easy to believe that your wedding has to look a certain way because of social media, wedding magazines, or the expectations of well-meaning family and friends. There can be pressure to have the perfect venue, elaborate décor, expensive favours, and a long list of traditions you’ve never really questioned.

But here’s something I hope gives you permission to breathe.

Your wedding doesn’t have to impress anyone. It only has to reflect the love the two of you share.

If your dream is an intimate ceremony with your closest family gathered around you, that’s enough.

If you would rather invest in your honeymoon than chair covers, that’s enough.

If you’d rather write your own vows, include your dog in the ceremony, invite only your favourite people, or celebrate in a beautiful little cottage instead of a grand ballroom, that’s enough too.

In fact, it may be more than enough.

Many couples tell me afterwards that having a smaller, more personal wedding allowed them to truly enjoy the day. They had time to talk with every guest. They laughed more. They worried less. They weren’t rushing from one photo to the next or trying to make everyone else happy.

They were simply present.

As an officiant, my greatest joy isn’t standing in front of a crowd. It’s watching two people look into each other’s eyes and realize that this is the moment their next chapter begins.

So if you’re planning your wedding and wondering whether “simple” is enough, let me reassure you.

A simple ceremony can be deeply meaningful. An intimate gathering can be incredibly beautiful. And an affordable wedding can still be unforgettable.

In my experience, the most beautiful weddings are measured by the memories they create, the promises they celebrate, and the love that surrounds them.

And that’s something no budget can buy.

If you’re dreaming of a warm, meaningful ceremony in Niagara, whether it’s an elopement, a micro wedding, a vow renewal, or a celebration with your closest family and friends, I would be honoured to help you create a day that feels beautifully, authentically you.

After all, your wedding isn’t about putting on a show.

It’s about beginning a lifetime together. How exciting is that!
